 Program Overview

The goal of MTTI is to help teachers develop the skills and learning tools needed to provide an enriched learning experience for children in the classroom.

Each level of the Teacher Education Program includes the following:

1) independent study
2) academic workshop on Montessori concepts in developmental  psychology, teaching methodology, classroom management, and curriculum preparation 
3) classroom teaching practicum
4) review and testing      

Early Childhood Certification program includes the development and use of materials for instruction in the following areas:  practical life, sensorial, language arts, math, history, geography, science, art, and music.

Elementary I (6-9) Certification program prepares teachers to respond to the broad range of interests of children in this age range by inter-relating subject areas in biology, geography, history, math, language arts, science, cultural arts, and music.

Elementary  II (9-12)  Certification is the culmination of all prior Montessori experience.   The emphasis at this level is learning to guide students to creatively problem solve.

Certification Requirements:

  • Successful completion of all course work.    
  • For Elementary certification, prerequisite Montessori Early Childhood certifications or equivalent course work.
  • For Early Childhood or Elementary I,  minimum completion time is 24 months;  however, it may take at least 36 months to complete course work.

A college degree is required for elementary certification. Individual state requirements vary with regard to teacher credentials and employment.

MTTI offers coursework for the three programs throughout the year.  Students complete an application form and writing sample before entering the program. Tuition schedule and current dates for Course II: Academic Workshops are listed here.

Location and Facilities

Montessori Teacher Training Institute (MTTI) is located in the university town of Clemson, resting in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in northwest South Carolina.  It is easily accessible by way of Interstate-85 and is less than an hour away from the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport.  A listing of housing accommodations to meet your personal needs can be provided.
Clemson Montessori School and the MTTI Teacher Education facility are well equipped with the required Montessori classroom materials and resource materials.
